What's So Special About Pima Cotton?

So what is Peruvian Pima cotton?

Peru has a millennial tradition of growing and perfecting cotton, which goes back to the pre-Inca cultures. Peruvian Pima Cotton (gossypium barbadense) is today considered to be one of the softest and finest cottons in existence. This precious commodity is grown on the fertile soil of the Piura and Chira valleys in northern Peru.

The fibre’s extraordinary length of up to 42mm and fineness between 3.3 and 4 microns is what makes Peruvian Pima Cotton softer, smoother and stronger than other cotton fibers. It is carefully handpicked in order to avoid the impurities that industrial harvesting leaves and foregoes the use of defoliant agents.

What makes Peruvian pima cotton special?

Simply put, Pima cotton is absolutely amazing to touch. It is silky soft and feels absolutely luxurious on the skin. It is also highly durable and won’t stretch, fade or pill. In addition to being extremely comfortable and durable, it is the perfect fabric for children who may suffer from skin sensitivities or allergies such as eczema or psoriasis.

Similar to Egyptian cotton being the superior cotton choice for sheets and towels, pima cotton is the superior choice for clothing and underwear.

Today, there are several companies specialising in pima cotton garments for babies and young children. But what makes Lilala KIDS garments even more unique is our pima cotton is GOTS certified organic and we ONLY use eco-friendly dyes and printing. We are also proud to carry the Fair Trade symbol ensuring our garments are made under the best human conditions possible.

But they are more expensive than other sleepwear…

That is right. But you get what you pay for in this fast paced world of mass manufacturing. Have you recently purchased a "cheap" garment only to have it fall apart or look past its prime after just a couple of washes? Did you then soon have to replace it?

We produce in small quanitites to ensure optiumn quality control, and our fabrics are the best we can buy.

At Lilala KIDS, we believe that because pajamas are likely to be the most worn item of clothing in any child’s wardrobe (roughly 10 hours a day, 7 days a week = 70 hours per week), an investment in a high quality, healthier organic garment is of highest importance. Lilala KIDS pajamas are made to last and likely to see through child one, two or more in excellent condition.

Will my garment be hard to care for?

Not at all. You can do anything to pima cotton that you do to ordinary cotton. Unlike other luxury fibers such as silk and cashmere that usually require extra care, pima is easy to care for, highly durable, and will stand the test of time.

That means you can machine wash it, tumble it in the dryer, and use your favourite laundry detergent. Nothing special required. Use it. Wash it. Wear it… it will still look great and be in fantastic condition as an “hand down” to younger siblings or friends.
